Is your life inhibited by your chronic pain? Would you like this to be different? What if you were to focus on something other than getting rid of the pain?
Often people with chronic pain alter their life in many ways to accomodate their pain often to avoid the experience of pain. It isnt the pain itself, but your response to the pain that can contribute to your suffering. You can only start from where you are, but let us help you get to where you'd like to be.
What is Pain Management?
Often getting rid of the pain is not the answer but instead to expand enough to live the life you desire with pain. Dr.Gentry has training in cognitive behavior therapy, mindfulness based interventions and acceptance and committment therapy which have been shown to be effective treatments for chronic pain management.
Mindfulness training teaches you to face your problems one moment at a time by focusing on the present, on purpose, without judgment. No matter what is happening you can find strength to face difficult parts of your life without losing sight of the things that are most important to you. Acceptance is a type of mindfulness skill that helps you deal with painful thoughts and feelings effectively and change your behaviors so you can live a rich and meaningful life. As a result, you will start to function better as you start to recognize that your pain impacts your life less. You may also be able to reduce your reliance to prescibed pain medications.
It is recommended that you continue to use other methods of pain management (e.g. massages, physical therapy, water therapy, weight loss) in combination with pain management treatment with your physican. We have worked with patients with various chronic pain problems including:
- Chronic back pain
- Comlex regional pain sydrome
- Myofascial pain
- Neuropathic pain
